The Mighty Huddle

Emperor penguins breed in the Antarctic winter, the coldest and darkest time of the year. The mother lays a single egg and walks back to the sea to feed, while the father balances the egg on his feet for about two months, sheltering it under a fold of warm skin. To survive the storms the fathers huddle together, slowly swapping places so that each takes a turn on the cold outside. The chick hatches as the mother returns with its first meal.
